Welcome to the Lubbock, Texas branch of AAUW!

BRANCH MEETING – TUESDAY 14 APRIL 2020  All AAUW-Lubbock activities have been suspended due to the COV-19 outbreak. Updates will be available on this page as the situation clarifies (last updated 3/27/20).

Speaker: Carol Flueckiger (Associate Professor, Texas Tech University Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts).

Professor Flueckiger will discuss her Solitude of Selfie project in honor of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 19th century address Solitude of Self and the 100th year anniversary of the 19th amendment (1920-2020).

Early feminist history is an important theme in Prof. Flueckiger’s artwork. Her ‘Solitude of Selfie’ project mingles modern imagery with the text of Stanton’s 19thcentury address arguing for suffrage. Working for suffrage her entire life, Stanton believed this address to be her greatest achievement as it outlines the intersections between individual rights and social responsibilities. Prof. Flueckiger uses her signature technique, which builds on cyanotype — a light sensitive chemical that she blends with drawing and painting via submersion and sanding methods — to connect the 19thcentury to contemporary social media.  She serves on the faculty in the School of Art at Texas Tech. Her artwork is represented by Charles Adams Gallery in Lubbock, TX.  Original ‘Solitude of Selfie’ project prints will be on display at the event. (For further details about the artist, see: https://www.carolflueckiger.com)
